Migrating data from sql server to sql server ce
I have developed a set of tools that can help you with this. Please note that 3.5 is not supported yet.|||Thanks! I will check it out!
|||Jo?o, I have tried your tools. But when i try to run it it says it can't open the device database. I want to export the sql 2005 database to a .sdf file. When I check the 'local' checkbox I still get the same error.
Is there any other way to port sql ce databases to sql server?
|||You must install SQL Compact Edition 3.1 on your desktop in order to use the "Local" checkbox.|||Great! it works! thanks. Does it also migrate foreign keys to sql ce?
|||It migrates PRIMARY KEY and FOREIGN KEY constraints. UNIQUE constraints are not migrated (they may show up as UNIQUE INDEX) nor are column defaults (due to the SQL language difference between engines, especially Access). IDENTITY columns are correctly migrated.

full-blown SQL Server 2005 instance with ease- attach/detach, backup/restore
or edition upgrade. In your case, an edition upgrade would be necessary as
you need to have your keys available for the encrypted databases

Migrating Data from MySQL
Hello
I am looking for a way to migrate my data from a MySQL database to a SQL2005 Express data base. All of my MySQL Schemas only have 1 or 2 tables in them so I would imagine that it isn't that hard to do. I treid just exporting it to a CSV file with the intention of just using import/export in MSSQL but in the express edition, it ain't there. Like I stated all of my schemas are only 1 or two tables none are linked in any way they are independant table and the most records any one of the tables contain is around 250. Any suggestions?
hi,
as you already found, SQLExpress does not provide import/export tools, but you can rely on the underlying fundametals of the engine it self to perform such a kind of operation..
you can, for instance, perform a bulk insert as indicated in http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=723808&SiteID=1, or directly using BCP
additional "modes" are indicated in http://blogs.msdn.com/euanga/archive/2006/07/20/672272.aspx

|||I don't mean to sound like a total dummy but I sort of understand what is being said and there is some really good round about information but, it just isn't getting me there. I have a table right now for example that I exported in CSV format from MySQL that has 6 columns and 203 rows. If I create this same table in SQL2005 Express, how do I bring that data into my SQL 2005 database. Admittedly my experience level with SQL and Scripting is not quite beginner but I wouldn't consider myself intermediate either. Could you dumb it down for me a little?|||Hi,I was in the process of trying to load data into a SQL Express DB with bcp see
Unable to open BCP host data-file
when I ran across this post. I read the above linked articles. The DTSwizard seems to only want to add a new table where bcp will load data into an existing table using a format file.
I have used bcp to load data in SQL Server 2000 but am having trouble with SQL Server 2005 Express. We are planning to purchase the standard version of SQL Server 2005, but I was wanting to get some feel for 2005 it until the $$$ actually come through. Isn't that what Express version is for?
Any help?|||hi

I was exploring the possibility of doing that, I even went so far as to import my tables in to Access however, I don't see a way to bring the data over into SQL express. Someone had mentioned using the DTS wizard but unless I am missing something, it isn't included in SQL 2005 express.|||The links above reference a utility
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\DTS\Binn\DTSWizard.exe"
It doesn't work for me because it seems to create the table definitions from the data file and I already have that part done.|||Nevermind I figure out how the Access option works. That was the ticket. Thank you.

Migrated from SQL 2k5 Express to SQL Server - Profile doesn't work
I recently created an application that stores 3 variables in the web.config in the "Profile"configuration:
<profile>
<properties>
<add name="Department" defaultValue="" />
<add name="UserName" defaultValue="Anonymous" allowAnonymous="true"/>
<add name="AL" defaultValue="" />
</properties>
</profile>
By doing this my web.config automatically configured itself to create a database in my app_data folder and also filled in all the table rows as necessary. Then I moved the code to my sql server running SQL Server 2005 Standard and found out that it won't generate that database in either the app_data folder or the SQL Server Data directory. I've gotten so desperate to get this database created that I've (temporarily) given "Everyone" full permissions to both directories. I then double checked that my named pipes to that server were enabled, and then also tried moving my database from my working sql express app from a different computer to the server. I still cannot get it to work.
If I have no database in the folders that worked on sql express i get this error:
"SQLExpress database file auto-creation error:
The connection string specifies a local Sql Server Express ..."
If I have a database in the folder it says it can't communicate with it or can't find it.
My web.config shows:
<add name="LocalServer" connectionString="server=SERVERNAME\West;database=ASPNETDB.MDF;uid=UserName;pwd=Password;" PoviderName="System.Data.SqlClient" />
Is there a way to successfully generate this database with sql server? Please Help!!!
I figured the problem out...
For those of you interested, here is the solution. I found on google groups early on when i had this problem, but it didn't work and I never payed attention to the error I got, I just assumed it couldn't work. Then I figured i'd give it another shot. The trick is to make sure you don't include the line breaks in your web.config when replaceing the suggested code. Anyway, below is the link (solution provided by Brad Hammond):
http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.sqlserver.programming/browse_thread/thread/5370c080936fda9b/5d39f0c6bf9f45dd?lnk=st&q=%22sql+server+2005%22+profile&rnum=9#5d39f0c6bf9f45dd
My machine.config solution:
<add name="LocalSqlServer" connectionString="data source=.\West;Initial Catalog=ASPNETDB;User ID=UserName;password=Password" />
Thank you Brad, Hope this helps other people out!

Migrate to SQL Server Express from Access
Anything I should know about before I start?
Also I want to work with SQL Express from another workstation instead of directly with the server, which tool do I use to build with it?
Probably very obvious answers but since it is critical to do it right, I wanted to check.
What is the best tutorial in regard to these kinds of functions?
THANKS!

migrate SQL server 2000 DB on hosted environment to SQL 2k5 express
I cant take backup or I cant stop the server as it is hosted environment sharing many databases. Note that I dont want to loose single transaction in this process..Is there any way to do this.
Thanks in advance
I suspect you're going to have to accept some window of downtime to accomplish the upgrade. You might post a question to the database engine forum about ways to minimize the downtime, as this is a common sort of request.

Migrate MSSQL 2005 Express -> MSSQL 2005 Srv
Hi!
What is the best way to migrate MSSQL 2005 Express -> MSSQL 2005 Srv?
YOu can either do an inplace update of your database (running the setup) or do a complete new install with prior backing up the database and restoring them afterwards.HTH, Jens Suessmeyer.

I was thinking more of the database it self.
Let's say I have developed an .NET site localy with a SQL Express-db, and later I want to upload it to my webhost and convert my express db to an "real" MS SQL server db that my webhost has supplied me with.
Hi, thats no problem, either to a backup and restore or do a detauch and attach. The B/R solution would be the preferable on e for me.

migrate mdf file to sql server 2005
i am working on a mdf file on sql server express 2005 and i would like to migrate the content to sql server 2005.
How can i do it ?the reason why i want to do this is because i want to work on the same database from different project|||I havent used Express but you could try copying the mdf file into the data folder of SQL Server and "attaching" the database.|||Yup, it's that simple. Copy, and attach.
Migrate from user instance to native db in SQL Server Express ?
I am currently looking at migrating a database which has been running in
"user instance" mode, onto the standard sql server express mode. Basically I
need to be able to connect to the database while it's running from other
scripts and the management studio, which I cannot do nicely while the DB is
running in user mode.
Is there any tools or good instructions on doing this?
At this point I've re-created the database from scratch and imported data,
however I am looking for a cleaner/effective way of doing this. Any
suggestions?Hi
I am not a SQLExpress expert, ut SSEUTIL will allow you to attach to a user
instance of SQL Express.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...&DisplayLang=en
You could then detach (sp_detach_db) the database and re-attach
(sp_attach_db) it to the main instance of SQL Server.
You would need to change the connection string in the application that
creates the user instance to reference the main instance of SQL Server and
not create the user instance.
