Migrating From Development to Production Environment in MSAS 2005

Hi,

I have built a project in Ananlysis Services 2005 and would like to migrate the contents of the Project ( Dimensions, Measures, Cubes Etc) to a New server having analysis Services 2005 , what is the best approach. Does microsoft provide any best practices document. I searched the forum and the topics on migration seem to be from Analysis Services 2000 to Analysis Services 2005, can some one guide me on migration between Analysis Services 2005 and 2005.

Thansks

A backup and restore (like in AS2000) is certainly possible. This is the only method if you need to get the data cube moved in a processed state (with data). Except you could use the new synchronization feature, but that would probably be using this feature for something it was not quite intended.

The recommended method would be using the new AS Deployment Wizard. Make a "build" in BI Development Studio of your database and fire up the AS Deployment Wizard. This will allow you to specify different settings for your cube database when it is deployed to the production server. For more info on how to use the Deployment Wizard, see http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-US/library/ms176121.aspx

Migrating from Developer Edition to Standard Edition

Hello,
I have Reporting Sevices Developer Edition running on a Windows XP Pro
workstation. I want to migrate it to Reporting Services/SQL Server Standard
Edition on a Windows 2003 server. Can this be done? Since the edition of RS
changes, and the edition of SQL Server changes, and the hardware changes, I
need to know if this is feasible, or if it would be better to redeploy the
reports to the new server. BOL isn't very helpful in this area, and I don't
have time to learn C# to use the RS utility.
Thanks in advance.Given that it is so easy to redeploy and the fact that everything is
changing, my advice is to install new and then redeploy.

Thanks for the reply. That is what I was initially persuaded to do, but
redeploying introduces the possibility of something being overlooked, and
that is what we want to avoid. Is it possible to use the RS utility to do
what we need it to do (i.e. copy the logical contents of the database to a
new database/server/edition) and have it work properly? Do you know of any
good documentation on the RS utility?

Migrating from Crystal Reports Charts using TopN and "Other" to Reporting Services

I am currently migrating several Crystal Reports that have charts. The chart series is set to use the TopN values in a count, and combine the rest of the series into one series titled "Other". I see how to filter the chart using TopN, however I need to still show the rest of the data grouped as "Other". I think the solution I need is to create a group expression that uses some sort of IIF function to create the "Other" group, but I haven't found a function that I can use to get the results I need. Any ideas?

I found the answer to my question in another forum.

I used option 1.

Migrating From CR 9 to VS Reporting Services

Hi,
I'm not that familiar with VS RS and I have to convert reports from Crystal
Report 9 to VS RS.
Is it possible ? If not, is there any equivalent of the "unbound fields"
from CR9 in VS RS ?
Thanks in Advance.
wadjaHello Wadja,
I apologize for contacting you on an unsolicited basis, but I read a
few of your postings on Google's Crystal Developers users group and
hoped that you'd be willing to help me.
I'm a journalist with Application Development Trends magazine (ADT,
http://www.adtmag.com), and I'm working on a story on reporting tools
from a developer's perspective. As you no doubt know, Crystal has
long been pretty much the only game in town in this respect, as the
former Crystal Decisions seeded the market with this tool (it's shipped
with Visual Studio for more than a decade, for example, and it ships
with a host of other applications and tools, too).
Now, however, developers have a choice of which reporting tool to use
when they need to incorporate reporting functionality into their apps.
Microsoft announced its SQL Server 2000 Reporting Services last year,
and there's even an open source alternative called BIRT (that's short
for BI Reporting Tool). I'd like to take a look at the positives and
negatives of each of these solutions -- Crystal still seems hard to
beat for straight-up reporting, but both Reporting Services and BIRT
promise better (that is, cheaper) report lifecycle management
capabilities, which could make them better choices for many BI-related
reporting applications.
Would you mind having a go at a few of the questions I've appended
below? I'd love to hear your thoughts on this issue. If your employer
prohibits you from speaking on the record to journalists, I don't
have a mind abstracting its identity (e.g., "a major pharmaceutical
company based in the Northeast," or "a large financial services
firm based in the American South"). So don't let that stop you.
Thanks very much for your time. I appreciate it, and I apologize, once
again, for contacting you on an unsolicited basis.
Best,
Steve
1. Is your organization invested in Crystal, or have you transitioned
over to Reporting Services? If the former, for what purposes or in
support of which applications do you use Crystal? (I'm trying to get
a sense for whether you use Crystal mostly as a default reporting tool
for app dev purposes, whether it's tied to the use of any specific
application, or whether you're using it mostly as a reporting
front-end for data warehousing and BI.)
2. Did your organization opt for Crystal as a matter of choice -
e.g., you evaluated CR in addition to a host of other tools - or did
it go with Crystal largely because it was bundled with your default
development environment, or core applications that you use?
3. In comparison with Reporting Services and other reporting solutions,
what features about Crystal do you most like? What features about it
would you most like to change? How well do you feel Crystal
addresses/addressed your core use requirements?
4. Re: Reporting Services, are you currently using it? If not, have you
looked into using it? What features, if any, do you most like? What
features, if any, are deal-breakers for you? How do you feel that
Reporting Services compares with Crystal and other established
reporting solutions?
5. Do you have any interest in an open source reporting tool based on
the Eclipse development framework? If so, have you looked at the BIRT
project?|||Hello Steve,
As I said before, I'm new with reporting tools and with my company.
Therefore I can hardly make objective answers to you.
All I can tell is that they (developers before I step in) used Crystal
Report (CR) to test it. Now, we currently use Reporting Services(RS). The
reasons that made us change :
- We don't have to invoice our clients for using CR, it is included in
Microsoft Licences (we have a partnership with this company).
- Several developers complained about the technical support given with CR.
They hardly find professional help they needed.
- I was said designing on RS was much more easier than on CR.
For the moment, we are not interested in other report tools, as RS meets our
satisfaction.
I hope I gave any relevant information for you.
Best,
wadja

The analysts changed the packages to Local packages so we could use the
Migration Wizard.
Now we have migrated them we had to install the SQL2000 DTS Designer
Components, from the Feature Pack, but we still cannot see the migrated
packages. I remember an article by Brian Moran in SQL Mag on how to fix this
problem but I don't have the article on hand.
Can someone tell me the fix please? I think it had to do with the registry.
Thanks

Migrating cubes from SQL Server Analysis Services 2000 to MS SSAS 2005

Hello

I am fairly new to SQL Server and wanted to know the best way of converting a .CAB cube created in SSAS 2000 to SSAS 2005 and then associate it with a database.

Rgds

Ankur

Backups done in AS2000 cannot be restored in AS2005. Your best course of actions is to restore the .cab backup on AS2000 system, and then migrate it to AS2005 system.

Migrating AS Repository Advantages

Is there any performance gain on migrating Analysis Services Repository from
.mdb to SQL Server 2000 database ?IMHO the repository will be more manageable, more robust and more secure.
I personally create a seperate DB for the repository i.e. AS_REP
The default is to migrate to MSDB. The problem with that being your jobs
and DTS packages amongst other things are also in there.

Migrating Analysis Services Roles

Hi,
I have an Analysis Services database that contains 5 cubes. Is it possible
to migrate the database and cube roles from a development machine to a
production machine by performing a file copy? If so, exactly what has to
copied. If not, what is the best way to do it if it is possible.
Thanks!

Migrating all reports to a new server

I'm Managing Reporting Services in a mid-size company, and we are just
beginning to develop reports for different departments...We just set
up a new server and redeployed all of our reports (there were just a
few so far)...
My question is..What happens when we have hundreds of reports and need
to migrate our entire reporting services system to a new server?
Subsequently, In a worst-case situation, how would we recover reports?
I appreciate your help!

advance!

Migrating a Legacy Maintenance Plan?

Has anyone been able to migrate a Legacy Maintenance Plan to the Integration Services style?

I'm using the SQL 2005 RTM, right-clicking the Legacy Maintenance Plan, and selecting "Migrate..."

After a few seconds, it presents the error "Input string was not in the correct format. (mscorlib)"

The only thing that sticks out in SQL Profiler is this statement:
SELECT s.log_shipping AS [LogShipping]
FROM msdb.dbo.sysdbmaintplans AS s
WHERE (s.plan_name=N'MaintenancePlan1')

and this error message:
Invalid column name 'log_shipping'.

but these happened near the beginning of the trace/action.

To the best of my knowledge, there isn't anything special with these Maintenance Plans. The plans have four standard jobs (Optimizations, Integrity Checks, DB Backup, Txn Log Backup). The jobs all have one jobstep, which start with "EXEC master.dbo.xp_sqlmaint ..."What is the sku of sql server 2000 that you are migrating from? What is the sku of the sql server 2005 you are migrating to? Log shipping is present only in the enterprise version and dev sku of sql server 2005.

A workaround could be to write a t-sql script to add a column called LogShipping to the table msdb.dbo.sysdbmaintplans and fill it up with 0.

After doing that, you can try to migrate. I think it should work.

Do let us know if that helps

Hope that helps
-nimesh|||A small correction in the suggested work around. The colum name should be log_shipping.

-nimesh|||I'm upgrading a SQL 2000 Enterprise to SQL 2005 (MSDN) Enterprise as a proof-of-concept.

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried this.

I'm still getting the error message "Input string was not in a correct format (mscorlib)" when I migrate a Legacy Maintenance Plan.

I don't understand as the SQL Profiler scripts are clean. Since this appears to be a .NET issue, I don't know how I can trace it.|||

I figured it out!

The Optimizations job had a trailing line-break character in the job step. Once removed, the plan migrated fine!

The migration scripts do not like line-breaks or comments of any kind.

Now that it migrated, I still have more questions...

1. Why didn't the legacy maintenace plans disable? Now I have a SQLMaint and SSIS version of the same job active and running at the same times. The migration could have asked me if I'd like to disable or delete the older jobs.

2. Legacy maintenance plans cannot be deleted from the SSMS GUI. (Refresh after you try.) One must use a combination of sp_delete_maintenance_plan and deleting the associated jobs.

|||(I also removed the log_shipping column from earlier and still had success migrating the plan)

migrate visual studio.net 2003 to visual studio.net 2005

I've a server with Visual Studio.net 2003 and reportig services.
I want to migrate to Visual Studio.net 2005
Are there some contraindications?VS 2005 only works with RS 2005. If you want to continue to design RS 2000
reports then you need to keep VS 2003 around. You can install side by side
(I have).

No. You can upgrade only RS and leave SQL Server as 2000. However, you do
need a SQL Server 2005 license.
> If I migrate to RS 2005 with VS 2005 ,must I modify my old reports or

When you migrate the existing reports continue to work. You can even
continue to deploy RS 2000 reports to the server but I recommend against
that. My experience was that although my existing reports did continue to
work, I had some weird little problems. What I did was bring my reports up
in RS 2005 designer, it converts them to the new format. I then redeployed
them and all the weird little problems went away. So, you might or might not
have a problem. If a report is showing a problem then convert it to RS 2005
and redeploy.

migrate sql2k dts packages to sql2k5

new to sql2k5.
i have some sql2k dts packages i migrated to sql2k5 using wizard and
they showed up under intergration services, stored packages, msdb, but
I can't open or edit any of the package.
For the same packages, if I saved them as external file in sql2k, then
import them in sql2k5, they will show up in SSMS, management, legacy,
DTS folder, and if had downloaded the Microsoft SQL Server 2000 DTS
Designer Components , I can open and edit the packages.
This is all very confusing to me.
first, why the dts showed up at different place in sql2k5 (what's the
difference between import and migrate?)
2nd, how to edit the migrated dts packages?
3rd, in sql2k, dts package is part of msdb, as long as I backup msdb, I
can restore all the pckages, how about in sql2k5, where are dts being
stored and are they still part of msdb?
thank you.=== Steve L === wrote:

DTS doesn't exist in SQL 2005, it has been replaced with Integration
Services...|||DTS services is no loginer in sql2k5, but you can still import or
migrate sql2k dts to it. I think you are missing what I asked in my
posting.

Migrate Reporting Services Databases

I am upgrading the server that houses the SQL Reporting Services
databases (RSwwebservice, IIS and Report Manager are on another box).
The new server will have the same name (fqdn) as the old one.
Any issue with simply backin up the SQL RS dbs and restoring them the
new new server?
Thanks!Make sure to backup & restore the encryption key!

I am not moving the Reporting Services Front end (i.e IIS, Report
Manager, etc..) do I still need to backup/restore the encryption key?|||If you only move the backend database, but not the RS webservice it is not
required to backup and restore the encryption keys. Nonetheless, you should
always backup the keys right after installation of RS.

and sql server standard on the same machine. I have loaded the sql reporting
services onto a new machine that also has sql server running. All I want to
do is move the database from the old machine to the new machine - when i do
the backup and restore i see the folders and all my reports but I can not run
any of the reports - i have tried to reactivate using rsactivate and rsconfig
without success. Can I just use DTS to copy the data from the old sql server
database to the new?

I get this error during migraiton from Analysis Services 2000 to 2005

IMRAN

Recently I successfully migrated OLAP database from 2000 to 2005 didn't see this error even I had to run few times migration wizards. Best guess, may be some thing not installed or configured correctly. However if you give at what step of migration you get this error that will help.
