Hello Raja,

I cannot help you with your specific issue but I recomend that you do not use the DTS SSIS migration wizard. I have tried it several times but it ended with creating new SSIS packages from scratch...

Hi Raja,

Did you get it fixed ? I have the similar issue scratching my head arround for several hrs.

Hi Rahim,

I started new SSIS and copy and paste to create second SSIS. It is easy way to start than DTS to SSIS migration. I don't find any DTS to SSIS conversion with out error.

Regards,

Raja

we found that embedding legacy DTS packages in SSIS worked fine. Just create a new package and add an "Execute DTS 2000 Package Task". You can then load the old package in and embed it permenantly. We've had no problems running our old packages in this way Going forward we will rewrite as and when required.

Good luck.

Thank you for your response. Since we have many packages and some of them are big we couldn't copy and paste it.

Instead we created new SSIS package and then added the problem packages as DTS 2000 tasks.

Migrating DTS Active X/ADO script to SSIS

Hi All,

In SQL Server 2000 DTS, I had an Active X script that, using ADO, performed the following basic operation:

Retrieve a list of account numbers through Recordset1
While Not Recordset1.eof
Build a sql statement based on fields from current row of Recordset1
Open Recordset2 based on the sql statement built
Run an update query based on results from recordset 2
Loop

I want to bring this over to SSIS, but i'd like to take advantage of the most current "ways of doing things" instead of just using SSIS's activex script.

Does anyone have any recommendations on the best way to handle this type of thing in SSIS? A script task? A script component? I've never really worked w/ ADO.net so if it involves that I'd have to pick up some pointers... any suggestions?

Thanks in advance
Jeff

A script task would be one way to do this. You could use an ADO.Net connection in the Script. You can then use that to help manager the connection information, and it will return a SqlConnection for use in the script. For example-

Public Sub Main()

Dim connection As SqlClient.SqlConnection = CType(Dts.Connections("MyAdoSqlClient").AcquireConnection(Dts.Transaction), SqlClient.SqlConnection)

Dim command As New SqlClient.SqlCommand("EXEC ProcName", connection)

command.ExecuteNonQuery()

Dts.Connections("MyAdoSqlClient").ReleaseConnection(connection)

Dts.TaskResult = Dts.Results.Success

End Sub

A script component is only used inside the data flow, and this doesn't seem like it is moving data anywhere really. You could use a data flow, OLE-DB Source to Recordset Destination, but then what. I think this fits into the over engineered category as does the option below.

Alternative methods could be to use the Execute SQL task to get the recordset and the For Each Loop to process the recordset. I'd be tempted by this option. I'd use a script task maybe to just build teh SQL statement inside the loop, then store it in a variable. I don't quite get the Recordet2 and Update steps, but maybe an Execute SQL Task would do this. If you don't end up with any real worker tasks inside the For Each Loop, then I would just do it all in a Script Task again, but using VB.Net and the nice things it gives over ActiveX Script.

Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Runtime ASP.NET Security Issue

I am struggling in calling an SSIS package programatically using the Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Runtime namespace.

I am succesfuly connecting to the package insofar as I am able to retrieve the package ID (GUID), but when I call package.Execute I get a 'login failed for user' error, which indicates a security problem.

My ASP.NET app is running as a domain user which has temporary 'SA' rights on the server where the package is hosted. In addition, I have set the protection level on the package to 'DontSaveSensitive'.

What am I missing to be able to execute the package remotely?

TIA,

Rick

This depends on how you deployed your packages -- I've encountere this problem a few times myself.

If you've deployed your package on the server, one of the things that you may want to check are the SQL security settings e.g., Windows authentication will go kaput if you have a firewall between your web and db servers, etc.

If you deployed it through file system you might want to check your package's ProtectionLevel property. The default EncriptSensitiveWithUserKey is the way to go (at least in my case) for this.

Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Pipeline.DoesNotFitBufferException

Hi

I have a SSIS project that has one parent package and three child packages. When I run the project on my development machine in debug mode it works fine. Also if i run the packages using dtexec on my development machine it still works fine. However the problem comes in when I try and run the project using dtexec on the staging server i get the following error:

Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Pipeline.DoesNotFitBufferException: The value is too large to fit in the column data area of the buffer.

does anyone have any idea how to fix this please?

thanks

G

Probably the data on staging server is different from the data on development machine?

You are trying to put data into buffer that is bigger than the buffer column size allocated for this data. E.g. script component builds some string, gets a string of length 60, and then tries to put it into STR column of length 50 - you'll get this exception as a result. You need to adjust the column size to match expected data, or cleanup the input data to avoid the overflow.

You probably don't see it on development machine, because your test data is different and this condition never occurs.

Hi again

I have a second package that has the same setup but manipulates a different data set and I am getting this same error but this time I can't find a way around it.

The data and the packages are exactly the same on both servers. On the development server the packages run with no problem but on the staging server I get buffer memory issues.

Anyone know why this is maybe?

It seems that the column width is too wide for the buffer so the buffer is overflowing into a second buffer which is being used by the other child package.

Any ideas?

Pipeline Buffers are not shared between child and parent packages.

Could you describe what the packages are doing? What component reports this error? Do both dev and staging machine have the same architecture (32-bit, or 64-bit)?

|||

Hi

In the parent package data is extracted from multiple flat files and bulk inserted into multiple database table. Following this 4 child packages are initiated using the execute package task.

within each child package a data flow is started. In the data flow information is extracted from a table (populated in the parent package). The data is transformed using a script component. A row count is taken and then the data is inserted into a second database table.

After some investigation. I have discovered:

-on the development server the entire package works perfectly with no errors

-on the staging server each child package works when it is the only one executed from the parent package.

-on the staging server when I run two child packages it seems the first child package works fine but in the second package to be executed the script component does not get executed (I inserted a MessageBox and ComponentMetaData.FireInformation and there was no output).

This is the error message in the log when running all 4 child packages together:

Hi

We had somewhat the some problems as described above. We are implementing a datawarehouse-solution using sql2005 and an 64bit windows 2003 server. We use workflow packages that executes childpackages simultaniously. Errors concerning memory and buffers popped up at random in different childpackages.

We installed SP1 and the Cumulative hotfix package (build 2153). This helped a little but didn't solve all the problems. We are testing for two days now and it seems that changing the SSISpackage-property MaxConcurrentExecutables from -1 to 1 in the workflow package solves the remaining memory and buffer problems. Setting this property prohibits concurrent execution of childpackages.

It seems buffermanagement on 64bit servers is still a bit buggy.

Hope this helps in your case too.

Hi

Thanks for the help. I narrowed the problem down to the script components in the child packages so I deleted them and recreated them and it seems to work fine.

No sure why this is. Any one know?

|||

Strange.

Did you create them in a beta version?

Do you have a copy of the old package? Maybe check the differences in the XML in the .dtsx file.

hi,

I also have same problem and also recreate my Task....but not solve my problem

I'm using Script Component Task to do custom transformation.
I add 12 output columns in output0.
5 of these columns is DT_STR and their length is 4, 3 is DT_STR 2, 3 is

When executing the package ,I get an exception as below.

I debug and find the execption comes form output0Buffer set value.
I alse do some testing,
1.Create a simple package wiht same Script Component Task and find no
exception.
2.Remove some output0 columns and find no exception.
It's very confusing me...

Any help is very appreciated.

|||I had the same error and exception. I deleted and recreated the script component and the destination component that the output from the script component was going to. It works for me now.|||was getting the same error - found the resolution was to make sure the output column created in the design script was set to the same size as the source column .

In my case I was trying to set the desitination column to 35, since that is the size of the ultimate destination column in the destination database. Even though I was making sure the string inside the script was truncating to 35 characters, the design script component would still throw the error.

I instead create a derived column component immediately following the script component, and use that one to do the trucation to the destination column size...|||In my case it was Custom Component which did not update OutputBuffer field lengths after a change in a Source component

Any one know?

|||

Strange.

Did you create them in a beta version?

Do you have a copy of the old package? Maybe check the differences in the XML in the .dtsx file.

Do both dev and staging machine have the same architecture (32-bit, or 64-bit)?

|||

Any one know?

|||

Strange.

Did you create them in a beta version?

Do you have a copy of the old package? Maybe check the differences in the XML in the .dtsx file.

You probably don't see it on development machine, because your test data is different and this condition never occurs.

|||thanks for the response but I am not sure that that is the problem since I am using the exact same data and exact same packages on both machines?|||

Hi

After some testing I have found that when I run the child packages in series as apposed to in parallel it all works fine. This should do for the mean time but if you have any idea why this is could u please let me know.

Any ideas?

thanks

Pipeline Buffers are not shared between child and parent packages.

Could you describe what the packages are doing? What component reports this error? Do both dev and staging machine have the same architecture (32-bit, or 64-bit)?

|||

Microsoft Visual Sutdio for Applications has lost the link to .

Hello,

I am struggling with a really ugly problem in SSIS.

I am designing SSIS package where I have a couple of Script tasks. Let's call them Script Task 1 and Script Task 2. Everything was working fine until this morning I added another Script taks (Script Task 3), which was trying to do some rudementary file manipulation. At that point I started getting this message:

"Microsoft Visual Sutdio for Applications has lost the link to .

Your work will be exported to c:\documents and settings\".

This is it! "lost a link to "dot". After this, the VS environment continues to run in debug mode, so it doesn't even crash stirctly speaking. I can stop debugging and continue developing, but nothing would run anymore and I would keep getting the same error. Moreover, after removing Script Task 3 (which seems to be the culprit), I would still keep getting the same error! Only removing all the script tasks completely and then adding them back gets the package to run again.

Any ideas?

Hi Michael,

This is the first time we are seeing this problem. The only thing that I can think that happened is that somehow those scripts got in a bad state.

One way to fix this kind of errors is to try and setting the precompiled property to false on those script tasks, remove all the breakpoints from the scripts, save the package and then reset the precompiled to the desired value and re-add the breakpoints. By doing that the precompiled version of the scripts will be refreshed and hopefully everything will be back in sync.

Also make sure you have SQL Server SP2 installed because it fixes some problems with scripting that might cause these errors.

Another problem might be if you generated script 3 using copy/paste in the package designer from one of script 1 or 2. Some problems regarding that operation were fixed in SP2.

Let me know if that helped.

Microsoft Visual Studio is busy

I get this message in a balloon that pops up frequently when I am trying to work in the SSIS designer. For example, I get it when working in a DataFlow task, trying to open editors for the OleDb Source and Destination. Is anyone else getting this? What could be the cause, it seems to get sluggish. What OLEDB drivers are you using? As a first step I would check that you have the latest version of all the OLEDB drivers, and upgrade if not.

Hope this helps,

Hi there,

same problem here. Since I use SSIS development in Visual Studio in combination with Vista, Visual Studio keeps being busy after executing larger SSIS packages. Looks like a Vista problem. Before I used XP where te problem didn't occure. It partically occures when the SSIS package is handling large data volumes (more then 100000 records).

A solution would be welcome.

Thanks.

I started seeing this after I uninstalled VS.NET 2003 and installed VS.NET 2005. Does anyone know if I uninstall SQL 2005 and reinstall it again the problem would be gone?.

Thanks

AK

Microsoft Visual Studio is busy

I get this message in a balloon that pops up frequently when I am trying to work in the SSIS designer. For example, I get it when working in a DataFlow task, trying to open editors for the OleDb Source and Destination. Is anyone else getting this? What could be the cause, it seems to get sluggish. Thanks.

What OLEDB drivers are you using? As a first step I would check that you have the latest version of all the OLEDB drivers, and upgrade if not.

I used to get this message constantly when using the v7 FoxPro driver. Changing to the most recent driver , v9, cured the problem completely.

Hope this helps,

Richard

|||TFYR. I'm just using the OLEDB source/destination that were installed when I upgraded my default instance to SS 2005. (I had been using SQL2005 side-by-side previously with SQL 2000). I've also noticed that when scripting objects it will also get sluggish and hangs for awhile on the step where it determines objects in the database. Right now, I've been waiting over 2 minutes to script a single proc out of the database, so I think there is some kind of systemic problem. Same problem when I try to expand some nodes in Object Explorer (Tables, procs etc), it'll be real sluggish.|||

Seems odd. Are your source and destination SQL Server machines, or something else?

Maybe the upgrade process didn't tie things together properly? As a possibility, would you be able to backup everything and do a clean uninstall/ re-install of SQL 2005?

Sorry I've not posted back earlier.

Rich,

TFYR. Yes, both source/dest are SQL Server machines. And yes, I can do an uninstall/re-install but probably won't get to it until next week . Do you think it might help if I tried removing the named SQL2005 instance that I have? Not sure how I would remove a named instance, but I will look in the docs.

Thanks.

Rich,

You got me thinking about uninstalling/reinstalling but before trying it I wanted to try removing my SQL2005 named instance and the performance is now much improved. I haven't gotten the "Visual Studio is busy" message yet. I don't get the long delay when scripting objects out either. Maybe it was because I had originally installed SQL2005 as a named instance side by side with SQL2005 default instance and then upgraded the default instance to SQL2005 but never removed the named instance. Anyway, it is much, much improved. Thanks.

|||Yes... i'm facing that kind of problem almost everytime. Especially when the project contains a lot of packages. After the pop-up appears, it will hang and i have to terminate the process using ctrl+alt+del. Until now, i still can't configure what d problem is! I don think it is oledb connection. I would say it is software problem.|||How much RAM do you have? I found that adding RAM helped.|||

I'm running 2 gigs of memory on a 2 ghz processor. So i know my computer isn't trash. But As of recently, every single time i open Studio I get issues with a pop-up that "Microsoft Visual Studio is busy." let microsoft know....

and it hangs for roughly 10 seconds. so if I make 20 changes to a page, that the changes themselves took me 20 seconds... i just spent (20*10 + 20) 220 seconds, or nearly 4 minutes to make a few quick changes...

Or, let's say that i like saving the pages alot, which I do, so I may copy paste a <br />, and then it locks, then i'll type something and insert a <asp:label tag, and it locks, then i'll delete the ID and insert a new id, and it locks... and maybe it locks again.

|||I can certainly understand the frustration as I was in the same predicament. I was so desperate I added RAM (increased to 1.5GB) and also purchased Registry Booster. I also removed a named instance of SQL2005 that was a remnant of a side-by-side installation with SQL2000. Whatever I did got rid of the problem and I am no longer plagued by the "Microsoft Visual Studio is busy" message.|||

Hi there,

same problem here.

Thanks.
