migrate visual studio.net 2003 to visual studio.net 2005

I've a server with Visual Studio.net 2003 and reportig services.
I want to migrate to Visual Studio.net 2005
Are there some contraindications?VS 2005 only works with RS 2005. If you want to continue to design RS 2000
reports then you need to keep VS 2003 around. You can install side by side
(I have).

No. You can upgrade only RS and leave SQL Server as 2000. However, you do
need a SQL Server 2005 license.

When you migrate the existing reports continue to work. You can even
continue to deploy RS 2000 reports to the server but I recommend against
that. My experience was that although my existing reports did continue to
work, I had some weird little problems. What I did was bring my reports up
in RS 2005 designer, it converts them to the new format. I then redeployed
them and all the weird little problems went away. So, you might or might not
have a problem. If a report is showing a problem then convert it to RS 2005
and redeploy.

MIGRATE TO REPORTING SERVICE 2005

Good Morning,
I've a server mssql 2000 with reporting service and so also Visual
Studio.NET 2003.
Now I want to migrate to Reporting Service 2005,must I to upgrade also
Mssql to 2005 version and Visual Studio.NET 2005 or can I to upgrade
only Reporting Service?
ThanksYOu can upgrade Reporting Services without going to sql 2005... ( according
to Books On LIne)... Although we put the Reporting Services databases on an
instance of SQL 2005 - I don't think we had to...

Wayne is correct. You may install Reporting Services 2005 next to Reporting
Services 2000 and then use the 2005 Reporting Services Configuration Manager
to migrate your existing SQL2000 database to SQL2005... BOL is gray in the
fact that it appears that this is only supported in a remote catalog (SQL
and IIS on separate servers) configuration or a web farm/scale-out (multiple
IIS servers sharing a centralized SQL catalog) configuration but since
SQL2000 and SQL2005 can live on the same server it can be done on a local
catalog configuration... having said all that, unless you are needing to
maintain a SQL2000 environment for other reasons I don't see why you would
not want to upgrade you SQL2000 RDBMS to 2005, go for it!

My SQL Server is still 2000 (note for all, you do have to have a SQL Server
2005 license if you do this). So, it is incorrect to say that this is only
supported with a remote catalog. That is definitely not true.
All you have to do when upgrading is select only RS 2005 when upgrading and
it all works.

it's true?|||RS 2005 comes with a version of VS that is used for the report designer. You
can run side by side (leave your VS 2003 alone). If VS 2005 is installed
then RS 2005 will install the report designer to use that.
So, you do not need to purchase VS 2005.
Note that VS 2005 comes with two new controls for web and winforms. If you
want to use these new controls then you would need to upgrade VS.

Migrate SQL Server StoredProcedures

Dear Users
Can any body tell me that how can I migrate SQL Server Stored Procedures to Oracle using DTS. I want to do it in VB.Net.
Thanks
OsmanYou can't migrate the actual procedures themselves, but you could migrate the text of the procedure to Oracle. I'm not sure what good that would do you.

What exactly do you want to do once you get the procedures into Oracle?

migrate from Oracle to sql server expresse

I want to find out if .net + java + sql server etc is a replacement for my present development environment.

However, I cannot migrate an Oracle database to SQL server express. SSMA does not work. Is there another way to migrate my Oraclke database to SQL server express?

If you are doing development then buy a copy of Dev Edition its $50 from Amazon, its a dev/test use only copy of Enterprise Edition. You can still deploy to express but I recomend using Dev for dev/test

Migrate DB from MSDE to Sql Server 2005 Express

Hi - is it possible to migrate to SQL Server 2005 Express from MSDE - and still use ASP.Net 1.1? Or will Express only work with ASP.Net 2.0?
My MSDE database has simple SPs (no functions), and straight forward tables - can I just use DTS from Enterprise Manager to transfer this from MSDE to SQL Express, or create a backup, and import that into SQL Express 2005?
Also, there was a sort of Enterprise Manager available for SQL Server 2005 Express at one point - does anyone know where to find that?
Thanks for any pointers/help.
MarkSQL Server Express comes with Express manager a separate install but I don't think the new DTS Integration Services is part of it but the product is still in beta so download the developer edition and use the integration services to do the migration. The management studio the replacement of Enterprise manager is a separate install under management tools. Try the thread below to download the developer edition. Hope this helps.

Can I still use the old ASP.Net 1.1 framwework with the SQL Server 2005 Express though? Or will it only work with .Net2?

|||SQL Server 2005 Express was released July 29, 2004 with Asp.net 2.0 for public beta 1 so I am sure you can use it with Asp.net 1.1. All you need is permissions and connection string, try the link below for Microsoft provided tutorial. Hope this helps.

When I tried the SQL Express beta earlier this year, I had some troubleconnecting to the database from a ASP.NET 1.1 application.
I found out that (at least in my environment) I had to connect to thedatabase using tcp/ip. In may case (the database was on the samemachine as the ASP.NET application) I used Server=127.0.0.1,1433instead of Server=(local) in the connection string.
It should also be possible to use Server=servername,portnumber instead of hard coding theip number.

Migrate ASP .net web site from sql 2005 express to sql 2005 standard edition

Dear all,

I've been using ASP.NET with SQL 2005 express for several months and everything has been fine. Now a customer asks me to install my application on an already existant instance of SQL Server standard edition.

I was not able to use nor my application, neither a HelloWorld example.

I created a simple Default.aspx that uses a simple database with a single table "Person" via a standard gridview. When I try to open the page I receive an error wich informs me that NT Network service is not able to access database.

I've been searching on google for hours and I've tryed unsuccessfully several different way.

Can anyone suggest me a scientific procedure to migrate an ASP .net web site from sql 2005 express to sql 2005 standard ?

Thank you very Much

Fabrizio

As I know the only think you have to change is a connection string because SQL express uses different syntax for it. You can move your database to SQL server standard just by connecting it to server, you have to create your users and give them correct rights, you also have to create ASP DB if you would like to use ASP authentication finally modify your connections stirings to point to SQL server not to local SQL server express file.

There are a lot of post about this on this ASP forum.

Good luck

Migrate Access2000 to SQL2000 database

do it from beginning to the end.
Thank you very much and Happy New Year.Kevin,
Microsoft suggests that you use the Upsizing wizard in Access 2k to
accomplish this. I have posted a url for you below that has a link to a very

Migrating the data shouldn't be too difficult -- for best results,
create the schema and database objects in SQLS and migrate the data
using DTS or the Access upsizing wizard. As far as ASP.NET goes, take
a look at the ASP.NET security best-practices whitepaper,

will get you started about thinking of your overall application and

Microsoft.SqlServer.Management

I am looking for a way to script out all tables within a SQL Server 2005 database using VB.NET. I am writing a backup utility and have been able to do stored procedures, the data within the tables, but am now stuck on scripting out the tables with their primary keys, indexes, etc. Sure, I could hard-code some stuff like "CREATE TABLE dbo" & strTable, but I am pretty sure there is a way to do it within VB.NET using SMO. So, any help that someone could offer is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I just googled it and found the following:

Not sure if the above will be any help for you

Microsoft.SQLServer.ManagedDTS.dll reference error in VB.Net 2002

I am using VB.NET 2002 and we have set up a test environment running SQL Server 2005.

I am trying to add a reference to Microsoft.SQLServer.ManagedDTS.dll which is required to run a DTS/SSIS package from VB.NET.

However the dll does not show in my add reference listing so when I select BROWSE and select the actual DLL I get a rather long error message telling me that only 'dll' and COM components can be referenced.

The exact message is:

A reference to 'C:\Programs Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\SDK\Assemblies\Microsoft.SQLServer.ManagedDTS.dll' could not be added. This is not a valid assembly or COM component. Only assemblies with extension 'dll' and COM components can be referenced. Please make sure that the file is accessible, and that it is a valid assembly or COM component.

Any suggestions?

thanks

Hi,

Unfortunately in SqlServer 2005 we do not support loading SMO in SQLCLR. If you want to build your assembly for dual use (i.e. both inside SQLCLR and on the client) you can load SMO via reflection. This works in a rather narrow set of scenarios though, for the next version of SqlServer we are looking at making sure that SMO loads and works inside SQLCLR.

Hi Ciprian,

Thank you so much for your repy. For a minute, I thought this post would never be answere. Your sggestion sounds good, but I have tried loading assebly dynamically in SQLCLR code and it was failing; here is one:

I use Assembly.LoadFrom("test.dll"); to dynamically load a dll in a SQL CLR pocedure method, but I get this error:

System.IO.FileLoadException: LoadFrom(), LoadFile(), Load(byte[]) and LoadModule() have been disabled by the host.

First method:
I have also tried to activate a managed COM, and it fails:

object objMethod = Activator.CreateInstance(objMethodType);

object[] myArguments =
{
strKeySet, strTarget, strMetadata
};
//Invoke Add Method
strReturnParam = (String)objMethodType.InvokeMember(
"Process", BindingFlags.InvokeMethod, null, objMethod, myArguments);

Second method:
I tried to activate an unmanaged COM, which in turn, calls a method in the above managed COM:
The instance of the unmanaged COM was created succesfully, but the method call failed with COMExeption

Any idea?

Can you give a sample of your suggestion?

Thanks in advance

I think that Assembly.LoadFrom fails to access the disk if you are registred as SAFE. The reason is that registering as SAFE only gives you only execution privileges, not file access. You should use Assembly.Load instead. But let me make something clear - this does not mean that you will be able to use SMO inside SQLCLR this way, it's just a way to load SMO only when you're not inside SQLCLR and keep the rest of your application code identical, as much as possible.

As for the COM objects, they are also not supported inside SQLCLR. You can of course use the sp_OACreate & Co. and load the COM stuff into the native space, but this has drawbacks as far as reliability and performance. If the native objects loads a managed assembly it will still be subject to the same restrictions.

Ciprian

|||

Hi Ciprian,

Thank you so much for clarifying that. Unfortunately, I had already tried sp_OACreate and it failed also due to managed COM. I guess my only option left would be extended stored procedure and managed COM. Or is that going to fail also?

|||

I'm afraid it will also fail. There is currently no way you can run SMO inside SQLCLR.

Hi

If you are running Windows 2003 x64 edition or Windows XP x64 edition, make sure you are installing the x64 edition of .NET 2.0 (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=B44A0000-ACF8-4FA1-AFFB-40E78D788B00&displaylang=en)

If you are running a 32 bit Windows version, you need ot install the 32 bit version of .NET 2.0 (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=0856EACB-4362-4B0D-8EDD-AAB15C5E04F5&displaylang=en)

When it comes to x64, the OS edition installed determines what installs you do, not the processor family.

Does anybody know something about this?

I don't know why you need it with ODBC datasource but the link below Microsoft explains the reason for you error. Hope this helps.

(The variable pointed to by the Addend parameter must be aligned on a 32-bit boundary; otherwise, this function will behave unpredictably on multiprocessor x86 systems and any non-x86 systems.)

Thanks for your answer.

Actually I don't need this xxIncrement method, I only need the .Net Odbc Provider and probably this provider is using this function. Now I have to refactor my code to native providers or find another .Net ODBC Provider.

Microsoft.AnalysisServices.AdomdClient.AdomdCacheExpiredException

Hello,

I have a asp.net application that connects to a cube in Analysis Service 2005 to do graphs. It's possible that other user might be using the same cube at the same time and make changes to the cube. If I use the graphing tol right after the cube is updated, I sometimes get an error message : "Microsoft.AnalysisServices.AdomdClient.AdomdCacheExpiredException : The Cubes collection has been updated on the server".

Is there a way to refresh the cache or refresh the cube collection? Any suggestion on how to handle this exception is appreciated.

Thank you,

Sincerely,

Annie

I beleive the better solution for the user in this case is to prompt your user to re-connect.

User session on the server has been disvalidated as a result of the some else's activity. To see consistent picture prompt your user to reconnect and refresh all the stuctures.
BTW this is behavior you would see in SQL Management Studio's Cube browser. The minute cube becomes invalid cube browser will asks you to re-connect.

Edward.

That would be around the beginning of July. Once they have all the data they
need, I have no idea how long it will take them to make the decision and get
the contracts in place. I'm hoping it'll be fairly soon but I don't have
direct visibility into that process.

Microsoft SQLXML Bulkload 4.0 Type Library with SQL Express

Hello,

I'm trying to follow a sample from microsoft for Using SQLXML Bulk Load in the .NET Environment

In the sample c# console app. it says to select add reference then In theCOM tab, selectMicrosoft SQLXML Bulkload 4.0 Type Library (xblkld4.dll) and clickOK.

The problem I have is I cannot find the library or the xblkd4.dll file on my pc.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Any help would be much appreicated.

Thanks

Karl

Hi,

From your description, it seems that you are unable to import the Microsoft SQLXML BulkLoad 4.0 type library, right?

Based on my understanding, XML Bulk Load is a standalone COM object that allows you to load semistructured XML data into Microsoft SQL Server tables. So before you are going to add the library, make sure that you have installed Microsoft SQL Server (i.e Microsoft SQLServer2005) product.

Thanks.

I have the same problem. I have SQL Server 2005 with notification services installed locally and am using v2.0 of the frameworks and Team edition VS.Net 2005 SP1 and am working in C#. I have install SQLXML v4 and have located the dll next to the v3 dll which is listed as a COM object in the reference listing of COMs.

Any help on what steps to take to install so the library shows up in the COM listing would be appreciated.

Edwin

Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express

I am attempting to connect to a SQL Server 2005 database using a Visual
Studio.Net 2003 application.
When I use this connection string, I get a Keyword not supported: 'user
instance'. error.
<add key="SiteSqlServer" value="Data Source=.\SQLExpress;uid=sa;pwd=;User
Instance=True;AttachDBFilename=|DataDirectory|MyDB .mdf;Initial
Catalog=MyDB;" />
When I remove the "User Instance=True", I get a
Database 'c:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\DATA\MyDB.mdf'
already exists. Could not attach file '|DataDirectory|MyDB.mdf' as database
'MyDB'.
What kind of connection string do I use and why doesn't VS2003 recognize the
"User Instance=True"?

SQL Server but you do not need to attach the files. This assumes you have
already loaded SQL Server on that machine. I am not sure if when using a
User Instance if you need the 2.0 client or not but I suspect you might.

I'm afraid that you need VS2005/.net 2.0 and SqlClient native data provider
for SQL Server support is included.
